Picigin from Baška, island of Krk
Configuration of the main beach in Baška dictates the roles in picigin circle. Players are divided on: outer players (both, in shallow water and beach), deep water players and wing players who play o boths sides of the circle. The type of playing depend also on meteorological conditions. One of the most important in Baška is the bora, i.e. burin which represents the best test for will and dedication to this noble game. Players which are positioned around the circle must have features characteristic for their position. The player on the beach must be explosive in his start and have to be ready for quick and short run with or without the following jump after the ball. The flexibility and possibility to change the body position in order to hit the ball optimally. Real outer (shallow water) players define the tempo and dynamics of the game. Deep water players must have "stategic" qualities. Their movement is somewhat distracted by the deeper water (maximally until waist) and their successfull ball interception depends heavily on the choice of the right moment to jump and throw themselves backwards (skyhook hit in Baška terminology). This kind of player give the quality of continuity to a game. Wing players have something from both previous types of players and the all-aroundness is their main feature. The game in difficult conditions can sometimes erase the differences in types of performance by different types of players. During the windy weather the picigin circle deforms into elipse with its longer axis oriented in wind direction and it changes acording the wind gusts. The roles of players can change in these conditions so that wing player can become beach player if necessary. The real picigin play can be played only with the proper ball. The weight of the ball also depends on the wind speed -- the stronger wind, the heavier ball.
